Short Biography

Serrano earned his degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV, Spain) and received his European Ph.D. following a long research stay at Université Paris-Saclay (France), supported by a European Marie Curie Fellowship. He is Full Professor and Principal Investigator of the Biomaterials and Bioengineering Laboratory (Serrano BBlab), Valencia, Spain. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at King's College London and has held Visiting Professor appointments at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the University of Pennsylvania (USA). He has also served twice as Vice Dean of Biotechnology and as Head of the Department of Applied and Technological Sciences for five years at the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV). His research has resulted in five patents and more than 150 scientific publications in leading international journals, including Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Additive Manufacturing, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, and Materials Today Advances. Beyond academia, he co-founded the spin-off company Metis Biomaterials S.L. He has received numerous research awards and has been listed in Stanford University's World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists for five consecutive years (2021–2025). In the latest two editions, he ranked among the top 1% of more than eight million active researchers worldwide. He is fluent in Spanish, Valencian, English, French, and Italian.
